A lot of questions come into the bokbo inbox and lately I’ve had a few from people asking what is the perfect baby shower gift!
We all know everyone will be watching as the paper peels back and we want their faces to light up at what we’ve chosen.
So what advice do I give?
I start with three things. The best gifts are thoughtful, beautiful and useful. I know that because those are the gifts I treasure most.
Useful, handmade gift
You can’t go wrong with baby blankets. They’re practical and beautiful, particularly if you choose a striking handmade design. These can be extra special, as if a little bit of love has been woven into the fabric. You can get chunky crochet knits that are perfect for snuggling up (one of my grandbabies just loves hers!) and pure cotton options that breathe while being gentle on baby’s skin. A good quality baby blanket will be soft as well as durable, great for wrapping and swaddling newborns, warming and comforting toddlers and sometimes, if you’re lucky, they become the security blanket a child will defend almost to adulthood.
Or if you’re looking for something baby can play with, how about these hand-knitted crochet rattles. This cheeky bear-shaped design is made from organic cotton so there’s nothing to worry about if baby decides to use it as a chew. They are perfect for keeping little ones amused!
Beautiful, unique gift
Then there are the baby shower gifts that spark memories. The baby milestone books, which mark all the important events in a little one’s life, from the first smile to the first birthday. My boys treasure their books and many times I’ve caught them checking back on their milestones, especially now they’ve got children of their own.
Then there’s the precious gift of pictures. I gave my daughter-in-law a voucher for a photo shoot for her first baby shower. It turned out to be as much a gift for me as it was for her. I got plenty of pictures of my grandchild as a newborn and a bunch of the family. They hang in my lounge, precious memories for always. I booked the shoot with Fifth Lane in Canberra and they were wonderful. I’d recommend them in a heartbeat if you live close by.
A photo album can be a fabulous addition or a gift on its own. Somewhere that new parents can protect the precious pictures of baby’s first years and also a gift they can share with their children as they grow and hopefully one day have children of their own. In this digital age when photos are on our phones, sometimes we forget how precious it is to sit together and leaf through the pages of a photo album.
Thoughtful, luxurious gift
And what about Mum. While it’s great to think about the little one when purchasing baby shower gifts, but don’t forget Mum! She’s spent nine months making that little bundle of joy so doesn’t she deserve a little pampering to help her prepare. How about a body lotion set made to help ease the birth. These luxurious kits include moisturisers that soothe stretched skin and post-partum gels to help heal tears and ruptures.
And if Mum likes to shop, maybe a gift voucher that lets her choose exactly what she wants or needs. You can get a bokbo voucher for any amount and it is emailed to you or directly to the intended recipient. Either way you can include a personal note with some suggestions for things that caught your eye on the site!
And if none of these ideas feel quite right… well, I’d encourage you to take a little time to meander through our site because at bokbo, every item we stock has been chosen by a bona fide Grandma (and Mother) to be useful, beautiful and thoughtful.
But at bokbo we go a bit further. We care about how our products are made. That includes the working and living conditions of the people who made them and sustainability and ethical standards all the way down the supply chain.
When you buy at bokbo, you can be confident that your gift is lighting up more than the faces of those who receive it. Your gift is helping to make the world baby grows up in just a little bit more safe and secure.
I love how good I feel when I give a gift that I know will be treasured. I hope you do too.
