Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree…” ~ Emily Bronte
“As the days wane, the nights close in and the trees don their vibrant hues, a chill creeps into the air. Not the bite of wintry blusters, but just a nip to let us know a new season is at hand.”
Autumn. Fall. Harvest.
Call it what you will. The name may change, as do its leaves, but the season remains the same.
It is also the perfect time to venture outdoors into the piles of crisp curled brown leaves with your little humans, reconnect with nature and make the most of the Harvest Moon as it follows the Autumn Equinox.
A beautiful time to be in the garden, soaking in the rays of the Autumn sun and sowing seeds for the cold months ahead. Seeds that will soon be lush with an abundance of colour, flavour, and variety — perfect for those warming, soulful dishes. Not to mention the fun and delight it brings as you watch it grow through the eyes of your little nature warriors.
For those unfamiliar with the Autumn Harvest Moon, it is the two weeks before and two weeks after the Autumn Equinox where there is an abundance of bright moonlight that is said to help farmers continue to harvest their crops longer into the night as the days become shorter.
Though sowing seeds under the light of the moon may not be everyone’s cup of tea, this time of year is about more than just watching the distinct beauty of autumn unfurl… It’s about sowing the seeds of tradition and ritual that can be shared in the days, weeks and years to come with the people who matter to you most.
It’s about allowing yourself to bury your hands deep into Mother Earth and remembering what it is to nurture and be nurtured, and the joy of reconnecting with nature.
It’s a meditative practice; it’s gentle exercise; it’s fun; it allows us to be nurturing and to connect with life on a fundamental level.
So breathe in the cooler air of Autumn with its tincture of earthiness, farewell the petals of Summer and start sowing those seeds under the Autumn Harvest Moon.
